So you got pulled over and the cop is preventing you from rolling up your window or closing your door, what are your options?
First and foremost, do NOT close the window or door on the officer’s hand. The best thing to do is say, “Officer, am I free to go?” The officer has a limited time that they can keep you pulled over, so this puts them in the position to justify holding you. If they say no, say, “I am invoking my Fifth Amendment right to remain silent and I do not consent to a search of my property or my person. I would like to get on my way if you’re done here.” This should get them to hurry up the stop.
