On June 1, 2020, Jim was breaking down boxes from a construction site of another home. He was at this location placing those empty boxes in a trash bin because at another location, it was overflowing. He is then approached by a deputy of the Marion County, Florida Sheriff’s Department, who drove by several times witnessing Jim do his job, but then decides to stop and question Jim about his actions.
Even though Jim was allowed to be on the property, the deputy tried to insinuate that Jim was trespassing on a construction site, which is a felony.
Jim tries several times to dispell the deputies suspicions several times by showing the Deputy paperwork that he is allowed to be there, telling him why he was there, and even called the builder to confirm he was allowed at the location.
The deputy didn’t believe him until he got that coveted identification, which Jim never game him because he knew his rights. After being illegally detained for a lengthy period of time, the deputy finally called his boss, whose number was on the permit on site, and let Jim go about his day.
Jim filed a complaint on the deputy, but Jim’s complaint was denied by 2 lieutenants and a Captian stating that after review, they determined that the deputy didn’t violate his rights. Another one of those “we investigated ourselves, and found no wrongdoing.”
Unfortunately, after this encounter, Jim lost his job for standing up for his rights and not backing down when he knew was in the right.
