In Wood County, Ohio, a tense morning unfolded as an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper sustained injuries in a collision during a high-speed chase. The incident, which spanned multiple counties, came to a dramatic conclusion early Thursday.
The pursuit was initiated when a trooper from the Lima Post clocked a vehicle speeding at 86 mph in a 70 mph zone along the northbound lanes of I-75 near State Route 103 in Allen County, shortly after 6:30 a.m. Despite attempts to pull over the vehicle, the driver failed to comply, leading to a high-speed chase.
The chase was temporarily halted near County Road 99 in Hancock County due to safety concerns in a work zone. However, the pursuit resumed once the vehicle exited the work area. The tactics escalated to a “rolling roadblock” near State Route 613, where law enforcement managed to briefly stop the vehicle before it sped off once more.
The chase ended near a rest area just south of U.S. 6 in Wood County around 7 a.m. The suspect vehicle crashed into the north side of the parking lot and the driver attempted to flee on foot. During the apprehension, a patrol car entering the northbound on-ramp from the rest area was struck by a semi-tractor trailer, resulting in injuries to both the trooper and the truck driver. Both were transported to a local hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Jaevon L. Johnson from Detroit, was arrested by officers from the Bowling Green Police Division. Johnson was found to be impaired, and suspected drugs were discovered in his vehicle. He is currently held at Wood County Jail, facing a third-degree felony charge for failing to comply with a police officer’s orders. Additional charges are under consideration as the investigation continues.
