“We came here today in Baidoa for a community initiative program. We all support the community initiative in the region or rather Somalia as a whole but this day we chose Baidoa. We came here to support the sporting activities in Baidoa as part of the broader community policing initiative. From time to time, we have been meeting and engaging with the members of the community in different forums but this day was different because we are here to support the youth groups who are here through the sporting activities. We have decided to engage and indulge in the sporting activities about the youth who are mostly lured into criminal activities.”

AMISOM Police handover Footballs to communities in Baidoa
AMISOM Police Unit handed over footballs to football teams in Baidoa on Thursday, as a gesture of goodwill, and part of efforts to encourage communities to get involved in community policing.
The footballs were received by the Somali Police Force in Baidoa led by Bay Regional Police Commissioner Col. Mahad Abdirahman, on behalf of the teams.
This is part of an ongoing initiative to engage with the community in its fight crime and provide activities to idle youth.
Col.Abdirahman received 20 footballs from AMISOM Police in a gathering attended by local authorities, Baidoa Police Station Commander, youth representatives, football teams’ chairmen and a group of young football fanatics.
Speaking during the ceremony, Col. Abdirahman thanked AMISOM Police for its continued support to communities in the region, especially in capacity building of of the local police.
“Sports is one aspect of community that strengthens security. The youth are very happy. We welcome you for visiting us. Sports are one of the things that got eroded during the civil war and its being revived now. We welcome anyone who comes to support us. Baidoa is secure and we owe it to sports for the advancement in security and peace,” said Col. Abdirahman.
He added, “Engagement with the youth goes a long way in making the youth busy with constructive sports instead of indulging in destructive activities like joining Al-Shabaab”.
AMISOM Police Public Information Officer Edwin Mugera lauded the youth for their role in peace bulilding through sports.
Mugera said “We came here today in Baidoa for a community initiative program. We all support the community initiative in the region or rather Somalia as a whole but this day we chose Baidoa.”
He explained that AMISOM police was targeting the youth since they are easily lured into criminal activities, such as terrorist activities.
“We want to engage them; they are the ambassadors of peace. Sporting is a unique way of assembling the youth together, having fun and above all build their physical strength,” he added.
AMISOM Police is mandated to train, mentor and support the Somali Police Force build full capacity to police the country.
