ATLANTA – June 11, 2024
A hijacked bus in Gwinnett County, carrying 17 people, veered through traffic in multiple jurisdictions,
A male suspect got into an argument with a passenger that eventually escalated into a fight. When the passenger pulled out a gun, he threatened other passengers and then shot the man he was fighting. The suspect then threatened the bus driver and forced him to drive off and not stop. Multiple police officers began pursuing the bus.
From downtown Atlanta, the bus reached the Midtown Connector and continued north on Interstate 85.
The bus traveled along the busy highway during early rush hour traffic.
Police officers from Atlanta, DeKalb County and Gwinnett County, as well as troopers from the Georgia State Patrol, were in the lead.
Officers formed a roadblock on Jimmy Carter Road as the bus exited and headed east.
Law enforcement officers closed Interstate 85 at Jimmy Carter Road to stop the bus but it did not stop.
Eventually, the bus crossed back into DeKalb County, where the road turned onto Industrial Mountain Road.
Once in Tucker, the bus turned east again, heading along Hugh Howell Road toward Stone Mountain.
The bus eventually stopped at approximately 5:09 p.m. in the 5100 block of Hugh Howell Road, just past McCurdy Road. The DeKalb County SWAT team immediately placed a Bearcat in front of the bus to prevent it from fleeing the scene again.
A number of people immediately exited the bus with their hands up.
The suspect was taken into custody.
A person was found shot on the bus. He was transported to an area hospital where he later died from his injuries.
