In a troubling turn of events, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler found himself at the center of a bank misunderstanding when he attempted to withdraw $12,000 from his own account at a Bank of America branch in Atlanta. Coogler, seeking discretion due to the large amount, handed the teller a note requesting privacy. However, the teller misinterpreted his intentions and, fearing a possible robbery, alerted her manager, leading to a call to the police.
Within minutes, officers arrived, and Coogler was detained, handcuffed, and questioned—all in front of other customers. After confirming his identity and ownership of the account, police released him, and Bank of America later issued an apology, acknowledging the mistake.
