November 13 is the date on which, in 1921, feminist pioneer Margaret Sanger was arrested for trying to keep the New York City Police from closing down the nation’s first American Birth Control Conference at the city’s Plaza Hotel. The arrest caused a riot among her followers and newspaper reports said “a great crowd followed the prisoners… down 43rd street to Broadway, 3000 strong.” It is in Sanger’s, and that unruly crowd’s, honor that Sir Richards has proclaimed 11/13/12 Birth Control Day.
