Christmas Day 1986 became a horrible day for Nicholas Guido, a young, innocent man mistakenly taken out by a Lucchese hitman. The hit was ordered by Anthony “Gaspipe” Casso, who sought to eliminate an enemy by the same name. The error stemmed from corrupt NYPD detectives Louis Eppolito and Steven Caracappa, who, using NYPD databases, provided Gaspipe with information on the wrong Nicholas Guido.
This tragic mistake was part of a broader relationship between Casso and the infamous “Mafia Cops,” who worked as informants and facilitators for the Lucchese family. Their connection to Casso came through Burt Kaplan, a Lucchese associate who met Eppolito’s cousin, Frank Santora Jr., in jail.
Nicholas Guido’s death remains one of the most infamous examples of the devastating consequences of corruption and organized crime, leaving a family mourning a life lost too soon.
