The song & video tell the story of a proud mother trying to deny the possibility her golden boy is becoming a dangerous malcontent. The lyrics present a ‘less-than-convincing’ description of his upbringing and future prospects. She desperately wants the world to accept her son but inside knows there’s no reason anyone should.
The ‘boy’ is 19 years old. He’s a good-looking kid but completely uninspired and bone lazy. He believes the world owes him a living and gets by mostly on dishonesty and deception.
He’s overly polite when talking to people with money or power who might be able do something for him but condescending to anyone who seems useless to him. He abducts the next door neighbour’s dog and leaves a ransom note. The neighbour complains to his mother who denies her son could be responsible.
The boy is a narcissist and probably a full-on sociopath. He’s managed to get his girlfriend pregnant. He decides its her problem and dumps her.
His father is disconnected from the family dynamic and spends most of his time looking at women on his iPad. In the video, without knowing it, he’s managed to stumble across some pictures of his son’s girlfriend.
He picks on weak people and starts fights whenever he can. He participates in a riot in front of a thousand cameras. Finally, the police pick him up at home while his mortified parents look on in shock.
