Spokane, Washington – Spokane Police Department Sergeant Eric Kannberg’s body camera shows that there’s some people that you just can’t reach. A drunk tried to start a fight with with the sergeant and the whole contact was caught on video.
Spokane Police Sergeant Kannberg had his body camera on as he was called to help an intoxicated person in downtown Spokane. While Sergeant Kannberg was working to help the person, he was contacted by another drunk, Cory Counts, who quickly got disorderly.
Counts got in Sergeant Kannberg’s face and harassed him during the course of his duties. The sergeant was forced to ignore the other person to deal with Counts’ disorderly behavior.
Despite Sergeant Kannberg showing the patience of a saint, and attempting to de-escalate the situtation, Counts escalated throughout the contact. Counts began to assault Sergeant Kannberg before the sergeant finally told him that he was under arrest.
Cory Counts fled as Sergeant Kannberg walked after him. Counts didn’t make it far before tripping over himself and falling down.
Spokane PD had this to say about the incident:
“Put this in the #PatienceIsAVirtue file: Our officers are trained in a number of techniques to de-escalate situations and the following video is a fine example of one of our officers attempting to do just that. Sgt. Eric Kannberg was dealing with one intoxicated male downtown when another intoxicated male, later identified as Cory Counts, interrupted the contact. Even with the amount of patience Sgt. Kannberg demonstrated during the encounter, Mr. Counts’ behavior continued to escalate. Counts even used his #PhoneAFriend option, but eventually was arrested for 3rd Degree Assault after assaulting Sgt. Kannberg. Please remember, all suspects are innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.”
Sergeant Eric Kannberg showed professionalism and patience as he gave Counts every opportunity to walk away. Cory Counts repeatedly made the wrong choice and is now facing felony charges for assaulting a law enforcement officer. Count’s charges are actually light considering that he could have also been charged with obstructing a law enforcement officer and intimidating a public servant.
