An angry mob trapped a woman inside a market restaurant in Pakistan after falsely assuming her dress had a Quranic verse on it. She was saved by a female police officer, ASP Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi, who escorted the woman through the crowd in Lahore.
The mob had accused the woman of blasphemy after they misread the Arabic writing on her dress. The dress has the word ‘sweet’ written on it which has no religious connotations. It’s been reported the crowd was calling for the woman to be beheaded, and demanding she undress.
A later video shows the woman with her face covered, surrounded by police officers and Islamic clerics. The clerics confirm the actual translation of the word on the dress. Then the woman apologises for ‘causing offense’, and says she didn’t think people would have misunderstood the Arabic.
Blasphemy is punishable by death in Pakistan, but many of those accused are lynched before they make it to trial.
