Like Charlie Parker, Miriam Makeba or Lee Perry, Public Enemy occupies a choice place in the history of prominent African-Americans in popular music. Programmed on the occasion of their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, this set at the House Of Blues in Los Angeles confirms this. In top form, Chuck D and Flavor Flav are celebrated first by the pioneers of rap via a review in which the late Ecstasy of the group Whodini and Doug E. Fresh are jostled. Powerful, the performance of the New York posse links, for its part, diatribes like “Rebel Without A Pause” and its snub to James Dean; or even “Bring The Noise,” a track laminated in its time with the metallers of Anthrax… Interspersed with words from the African-American gotha (DMC, Eddie Murphy…), this concert is also worthwhile for its soundtrack. Replacing the great Terminator X, DJ Lord throws his share of scratches here. An obvious sound collage with the revolutionary “Fight The Power,” a title immortalized in the cinema by Spike Lee.
