In 1988, a riot broke out in Tompkins Square Park in NYC’s East Village between the police, park squatters, and local residents. Artist and photographer Clayton Patterson captured three hours worth of video which led officials to declare the event a police riot. Before outlets like Vimeo and YouTube, Patterson used the power of the consumer video camera to bring justice to the riot victims.
