(warning: distressing) During Deobra Redden’s sentencing hearing for an attempted battery conviction on January 3, he leapt over the bench and attacked his judge, Mary Kay Holthus. Holthus, along with a court marshal and the judge’s law clerk, were injured as a result.
Five days later, Redden stood before Holthus again to finish his sentencing. However, this time around, he wore shackles, a mask, and orange mitts over his hands.
Holthus emphasized that the attack didn’t change her sentencing for Redden’s initial offense, but he now faces 13 new charges following the incident.
Redden’s older sister, LaDonna Daniels, told reporters outside the court, ‘He struggles with his illness,’ noting that he has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder but hasn’t been receiving treatment lately. ‘It’s a chemical imbalance.
