On this specific day, I visited the United States Post Office in Garden Grove to conduct a First Amendment audit and document my experiences for Long Beach Observer.
During my visit, I noticed the absence of Poster 7, which outlines the rules and regulations for conduct on postal property, including the right to film in public areas.
Poster 7 is crucial because it provides clear guidelines for both the public and postal employees, ensuring that everyone is aware of their rights and responsibilities. Its absence can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts, as people may not be informed about the legal allowance of public filming in these spaces.
Additionally, I observed a significant lack of awareness and education among various customers regarding their rights and the legality of public filming. This lack of knowledge underscores the importance of fostering an understanding and acceptance of public filming. By promoting these ideas, we remind others of the value of transparency and accountability in public spaces. Filming in public serves as a powerful tool to protect our civil liberties, document interactions, and hold individuals and institutions accountable for their actions.
In addition to our audit, we delve into the phenomenon of entitled individuals, often referred to as “Karens,” who misuse their perceived authority and call on officials to interfere in non-criminal situations. We shed light on the complexities of these encounters and highlight the importance of respecting our right to record in public spaces.
