A Monroe County sheriff’s deputy claimed she stopped a car occupied by Hispanic vacationers because both tag lights were out – they weren’t. She alleged when the car passed her it was following a semi too closely – according to an expert, it wasn’t. What began as a questionable – if not illegal — traffic stop morphed into a desire to obtain consent to search for drugs where there was no probable cause to do so. And it ended as an immigration status investigation, with Border Patrol taking into custody a passenger – an undocumented immigrant, champion boxer and married father of three from Atlanta.
