STORYLINE:
Israeli police sealed off an encampment filled with thousands of Gaza withdrawal opponents Tuesday, trading punches and dragging off protesters in the biggest confrontation yet over the mid-August pullout.
The government said it was determined to block the protesters from marching to the Gaza settlements marked for evacuation, fearing that hardline reinforcements would vastly complicate the contentious withdrawal.
The protesters said they would remain in their makeshift protest camp in the Israeli farming community of Kfar Maimon and try to march again Wednesday – and the the coming days – setting the stage for more confrontations with police.
The government said it would not be cowed by demonstrations and was determined to push through with the “disengagement” plan, which Prime Minister Ariel Sharon unveiled a year-and-a-half ago.
