Phillip Carter, along with his passenger, were killed by a drunk driver on their way home from a hike. He worked at “Paddy Murphy’s” in Bangor as a bouncer where he was often seen sitting on a stool reading a book. He became known as, “The Reading Bouncer.”
Phil’s family wanted to keep his memory alive so they began, “The Phillip Carter Reading Foundation.” They have several locations set up in public schools and at “The Community Closet” for people to be able to enjoy books for free.
Phil’s family honor his memory in many beautiful and meaningful ways. Every year on August 5th they gather together for a big fireworks display as a way to remember him and as his sister said, “We hope he can see the lights from heaven.”
