I shot this video around midnight. Riot police had dispersed most of the crowds but a new one formed about 50 feet from my house next to a new bonfire on 19th and Valencia streets. A few cop cars tried to scare away the revelers but a hailstorm of 40 oz beer bottles made them retreat. Amazingly, this lone old guy from the fire department strolled up, like cowboy out of nowhere, through the flying glass with a fire extinguisher in hand. He set to work putting out the fire as though none of the revelers were about to attack him. Fortunately, a few strangers had his back blocking the worst, and I ended the video so that I could stand with them. Even more fortunately, his fire extinguisher ran out quickly so he had to retreat before someone smashed a bottle on his head (or mine). T’was an epically dumb night.
