In early 2014, a year after Hugo Chavez’s death, opposition groups held demonstrations around Venezuela to protest high crime, corruption, and economic collapse. On Youth Day, students marched in Caracas to demand “The Exit” of President Nicolás Maduro. A few blocks away, a pro-government rally gathered behind riot police forces. Two people were shot dead on February 12. Government officials said a Maduro supporter and one person were killed amid unrest in the city center. Protesters burned four police patrols, and vandalized some government offices during the day. Police arrested 23 people. The violence spread for months; By the end of the year, 43 people got killed, and hundreds were arrested. Maduro’s government remains in power.
