A “standing army” of specialist public duty officers is being introduced to ensure police can deal with the disorder where needed, the prime minister has announced.

Speaking after chairing an emergency Cobra meeting, Sir Keir Starmer said a “standing army of specialist officers, public duty officers” will be introduced “so we have enough to deal with this where we need them”.
Starmer also vowed to “ramp up criminal justice” and said he has asked for those involved to be named and identified early so they “feel the full force of the law”.
His final focus from the meeting was to stress that “criminal law applies online as well as offline”.
