this film is an expression of my fascination with mathematics and science. it has become a mixture of drawings and recordings of the church concert in Roskilde Cathedral. the music is real sound mixed with own music composition made on computer

Dr Hannah Fry is an Associate Professor in the Mathematics of Cities at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at UCL. She works alongside a unique mix of physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists, architects and geographers to study the patterns in human behaviour – particularly in an urban setting. Her research applies to a wide range of social problems and questions, from shopping and transport to urban crime, riots and terrorism.
Alongside her academic position, Hannah is an experienced public speaker giving conference keynotes and taking the joy of maths into theatres and schools. Hannah’s mathematical expertise has led to the development of several BBC documentaries.
British documentary from 2017. (Joy of Data) Big data is the new variety. Everyone wants them, everyone knows how to use them – and many are worried about it. The British mathematician Hannah Fry, on the contrary, believes that data is the path to information, insight and wisdom. Fry talks about what the many data can be used for, and about the pioneers behind big data, men like the mathematician Claude Shannon, who none of us have heard of, but who single-handedly launched the information age!

Benford’s law states that in lists of figures from everyday life, the first digit will be 1 for approx. 30% of the numbers, and higher digits are less likely to be first digits. This rule applies to e.g. for bills, house numbers, prices, population, length of rivers and physical and mathematical constants. The law is named after the physicist Frank Benford.
