Kelly Clayton, a bright and promising young woman who later dropped out of university and met Tom Clayton, a former hockey player. After marrying and having two children, the couple settled in a small town where Tom ran a business. On September 28th, 2015, Kelly was brutally murdered in her home while Tom was out playing poker. Their daughter Charlie later described the assailant as resembling her father.
As the investigation unfolded, it was revealed that Tom had hired Michael Beard, a former employee, to kill Kelly and stage a fire in exchange for $10,000. Michael, however, failed to set the fire and left evidence behind. Despite his attempts to claim he only agreed to commit arson, Michael was convicted of Kelly’s murder, along with Tom, who was found guilty of orchestrating the crime. Both men received life sentences, while a third accomplice, Mark Blandford, was sentenced to four years for manslaughter. Kelly’s children were placed in the custody of her sister Kim.
