Large protests around the UK overwhelmed a minority of far right rioters on Wednesday night, with tens of thousands taking to the streets bearing signs reading “immigrants are welcome here”. They followed several nights of rioting and disorder by far right hooligans in cities around the country.
The week of rioting, which started after the brutal murder of three young girls, were the first major crisis to hit the UK since Keir Starmer became Prime Minister in July.
The New Statesman’s Nick Harris attended the protest in Walthamstow on Wednesday night, and joins Hannah Barnes and Rachel Cunliffe on the New Statesman podcast to report what he found.
They also discuss the government’s response to the riots – and what Keir Starmer must do now to bring the country together.
