STORYLINE:
The rival Hamas and Fatah factions reached a new ceasefire deal on Saturday, after a week of deadly fighting, officials announced, pledging to pull fighters off the streets and exchange hostages.
Previous truce agreements quickly collapsed in recent days, and it was not clear if this one would hold.
The new ceasefire was agreed at a meeting at the Egyptian Representation Office in Gaza City.
“The main guarantee is that this agreement was reached by Abu Mazen – Mister Abbas (Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas) – and Mister Mashaal (supreme Hamas leader, Damascus-based Khaled Mashaal), and I have just spoken to Mister Mashaal and they have confirmed that, and the two sides – Fatah and Hamas – inside and outside have reached an agreement to initiate this additional ceasefire at 3 p.m. (12:00GMT),” Palestinian Information Minister, Mustafa Barghouti said in the West Bank town of Ramallah.
“But of course the main thing is what will happen on the ground,” Barghouti said.
The weeklong Hamas-Fatah fighting has killed more than 50 Palestinians and wounded dozens.
Both sides promised to pull fighters off the streets, dismantle roadblocks and exchange hostages.
“The streets will be checked in order to make sure they are cleared of gunmen,” said Abed Al-Khqim Awad, a Fatah representative involved in the ceasefire talks.
Abbas has stayed in his West Bank headquarters during the fighting.
