On February 19, 2023, in Beloit, Wisconsin, an on duty officer witnessed a vehicle fail to stop at two stop signs. Due to the two traffic violations, a traffic stop was initiated.
The vehicle sped off and eventually crashed. The driver took off on foot and the two passengers were detained. Officers then began their search for the driver. One officer saw footprints in the snow, and followed them. He noticed that the suspect appeared to attempt to jump a fence in two different locations before the footsteps ended abruptly in the snow near a large hole in the ground.
After searching the area again, the officer noticed a red hoodie in the hole that was not visible before. The officer knew this was the driver. The driver, identified as Joseph, eventually got out of the hole and was arrested.
Joseph was charged with vehicle operator fleeing or eluding an officer, 2nd degree recklessly endangering safety, OWI 5th, operating with prohibited alcohol concentration 5th, 2 counts of obstructing an officer and disorderly conduct.
